There's something for every family member. Being a marina development, the primary focus is of course on water activities. But confirmed landlubbers too have plenty of choice. Relax under your umbrella on the beach, take a stroll in the park, explore the maze, pick fruit in the orchard, spot a rare species from the bird hide, improve your golf putting, run your dog or take the kids to the play park. For those who enjoy racquet games, maybe a hectic game of squash or on a balmy summer's evening, mixed doubles tennis under floodlight.

And before you turn in for the night, how about a short stroll through your neighbourhood? Safe and still, with moonlit water at your feet and a jeweled sky above, it's the perfect prelude to a peaceful night's sleep.

Gardens and orchards
Do you enjoy the simple pleasure of home-grown herbs, spices and vegetables, fresh from the garden directly to your own kitchen table? Thesen Islanders are positively encouraged to pursue this healthy alternative. All residents have access to the communal vegetable garden where you can apply to the Home Owners Association to rent a lot. A nominal annual fee for your water is charged.

The raised beds are fully prepared with good topsoil and compost and you're welcome to store your gardening implements in the carefully restored adjacent crofter's hut. The vegetable garden is situated next to the children's playground behind the Clubhouse.

Thesen Islands visitors are often surprised to encounter our fruit orchard. There are a wide variety of trees including citrus, plums, figs, granadillas and nuts. We have rows of strawberries and are experimenting with vine cultivars. An automated, drip-feed irrigation system is in place.

The maze to the south of the orchard was constructed from excess poles recovered from the demobilization of the old timber factory. The poles have been threaded with fruit trees and creepers to provide a magical experience for children and adults alike.

Bird reserve
Thesen Islanders have the privilege of a bird reserve on their own doorstep. The southern edge of the island with its stretches of reed beds is an important herons breeding ground, and the marshes on the north-eastern side are teeming with water birds and waders like cormorants, egrets, African spoonbills, Egyptian geese, and blacksmith lapwings, while the rare and distinctive black oystercatcher is often sighted as well. A bird hide overlooking the wetlands allow residents to observe coots, herons, egrets and ducks at close range.
